Gemini can now edit PDFs, spreadsheets and docs without leaving the chat
Open the file full screen, edit text by hand or select a passage and ask the AI to change just that. In spreadsheets, highlight a table and ask for a chart.

On October 29, Google added a file editor inside Gemini. Instead of asking for a change, copying the answer and pasting it back into the original, you open the file in the conversation, edit it directly and bring in the AI only for the part you care about. It’s available to all users in supported languages, including free personal accounts.
How it works
Expand the file to full screen. From there you can type as in a normal editor, or select a passage and ask for a specific change, like "make this paragraph shorter." In spreadsheets, you can highlight a table and ask Gemini to turn it into a chart.
What works where
| Platform | Editable formats |
|---|---|
| Web | PDF, Google Docs, Google Sheets, presentations, Markdown, TXT and code |
| Mobile app | PDF only, for now |
What Google didn’t say
The announcement doesn’t mention file size limits, edit limits or whether edited files save to Google Drive automatically. Test with a copy before trusting it with something important.
Editing PDFs has always been a pain if you don’t pay for a dedicated editor, and that’s where this helps most: fixing a field on a form or tweaking text without installing anything. For Docs and Sheets the gain is smaller, since Gemini was already built in. The usual caution applies double: the AI edits what you ask, and sometimes what you didn’t. Reread the whole file before sending it to anyone.
